The Alpha Sigma Alpha is the local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at De Anza College. It was chartered (by founding advisor Charles Klein) during the 1989-1990 academic year, and its first formal Induction Ceremony of chartering members was in May 1990. The primary purposes of Phi Theta Kappa are to recognize outstanding academic achievement at the community college level, enhance academic development through Honors in Action topic, develop leadership skills in its members, and offer a variety of community service activities.

There are approximately 200 De Anza College students who become members of Phi Theta Kappa each quarter, and over 100,000 community college students nationwide.
